Our Classical Fan Back

“The details are not the details. They make the design.” - Charles Eames

All of the garden swing seats available to buy in our range are made in the South West of England with dedication, skill, and passion. What fuses our furniture pieces is that they are all handcrafted and beautifully finished with the finest FSC timber, making them the perfect focal centrepiece for your garden.

We currently offer five different back designs to our outdoor swing seats and benches, but the most popular is, and has been since we started, The Fan Back.

We consider The Fan Back a design classic of ours that has stood the test of time since its inception 20 years ago, and it remains our best seller.

What Makes a Design Classic?

A design classic is a manufactured object with timeless aesthetic value. It serves as a standard of its kind and remains up to date regardless of the year of its design.

It takes time to become a classic. If there's one definition of this often overused term, it's about resisting the inevitable ebb and flow of taste and fashion. Classics can't be invented, they evolve. They have to win approval and slowly acquire value & that is what we feel has happened with our Fan Back, a beautiful, and simple, understated back design that lends itself to many settings, seamlessly blending into its surroundings.

Characteristics of Classic Design

A classic design is not simply defined by how well it functions or its impact. Classic designs can be recognized as from their design movement/era. Yet, originality— whether it is evolutionary or revolutionary—seems to be the trait that makes a product “timeless”.

Design classics are often strikingly simple, and that is exactly what we believe our Fan Back to be, it represents our flagship piece and is as popular with customers now as it was 20 years ago when we made the very first one.

But don’t let that put you off our other four back designs, they’re all fabulous too!
